names

I suppose most of my online friends don't know this since I don't mention these objects often, but did you know that most of my inanimate posessions have names?

Much like christening boats (which we do at work, thank God, or I'd have to take that into my own hands-- incidentally, our boats are named Hudson, Michelle Rose, Ursula, Roccus, Thunderbird and White Whaler), out of part habit and part superstition, most of my (expensive) gadgets have names. My phone (Roger), computer (Joe), fishing rods (Izzy and Ziggy), car (Lisa), and my latest christened addition, my new Canon Digital Rebel camera (Ella) all possess names. And yes, I use them in sentences, such as: "Should I take Ziggy fishing today?" or "Lisa didn't start that well this morning" and "I think Joe's got a virus!"

So it's funny that my husband humors me, when today he turned to me after looking at our potted plant in the living room, and said: "how come our plant doesn't have a name?" And before he got an answer, he said: "He looks like a Louie. Louie, you better grow up strong and start looking like a Louie." And we went back to our regularly scheduled primetime TV.

(P.S. No name yet for the grand piano. Names sort of grow on an object after a while, you know. You have to wait for the right name.)

Louie the plant...I love it!

Why do you think my car is named Berry? (though sometimes I call her Zippy, but that's more an adjective than a name.)

It does! It's totally coincidental that it does, as it was the only decent car on the lot. I got lucky!

She has strawberry shaped air freshners hanging in the rearview window. ;)

My mom always named our plants when I was little so I got that habit from her.

And then I had to give my computer a name for the university's network, so I named it Lillith. But before that my first car was Silver... my mom had always named her cars too.

Now I'm trying to find a name for my Playstation 2 and for my tattoo. I don't own anything else expensive enough to warrant one.

What happens if you ever have kids and you've run out of names?

Don't worry-- I doubt I'll be that rich to own that many items that I'll run out of names... ;)
