May. 22nd, 2006 01:35 pmKade, my Border Collie, is a very active dog and constantly needs stimulation. Therefore, even whilst I am watching my favorite TV sitcom at night, I will ask him to do tasks for me to keep him busy-- bring me a tennis ball, the rope, the red ball, or the bone. Sometimes, I tell him to find not just objects but individuals, like his "daddy" or Kaiser the German Shepherd.
Yesterday, while watching TV, before I realized what I was saying, I absently commanded: "Find Rufus". And the words just hung there, in the heavy air between us, till Brian said emphatically, "Rufus is dead". (See post on May 17th, if you missed it)
Kade ran to the kitchen as the words left my lips, before I could take back the words, and came running back with a soft whimper and a confused frown. I felt like my heart would collapse in on itself, to fill the hole left behind by Rufus' departure.
