Posterior tongue-tie diagnosis
Apr. 1st, 2014 11:17 amLactation consult today went so well. If your insurance covers part of it, or even none of it, I highly recommend getting one!!
She had a lot of positive things to say. I'm positioning her well, and experienced enough from my first breastfeeding relationship with Erika to know what a good latch is, and when she observed the nursing, she said I'm doing "everything right".
The problem, as many of you suspected, is a slight posterior tongue-tie. Not a very obvious one that most pediatricians would spot immediately, but she said one that a LC is likely to note upon examination. So I'm going to look into reaching out to an ENT she recommended in New York City for a follow-up diagnosis and possible clip.
We did a weighted feed (incidentally, she's gained another 2 oz. since yesterday's pediatrician appointment) and she was only able to take in 1.5 oz. (LC said less than 1.0 oz. would be troubling, but ideally we are looking for 2.0 - 3.0 oz. and thus agrees with the pediatrician's assessment that she needs to be supplemented). She also said that the 1.5 oz. could vary, so we could be looking at 1.3 - 1.8 oz. per nursing, but still below ideal.
We are going to do away with supplementing with bottles and instead use a direct-breast supplementation system (I'd never heard or seen one before!), pump only 5 - 6 times a day for 10 minutes, and do one "power pump" (30 - 60 minutes, once a day) to mimic a cluster-feed.
Consume: "More Milk Plus", Goat's Rue, Shatavari, and Milkmaker cookies, 4 times a day.
