24:2013 (Week of June 12 - 18, 2013)

2013-24-jun18

  • Brian and I celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary. Photo in center taken on June 12, 2013 at the beach at sunset.

  • Erika learns how to play baseball. First day at it and she attempts 10 swings and makes contact 3 times!

  • Visit Oma on Sunday for her birthday and also Father's Day. We have hamburgers and hotdogs and strawberry shortcake.

  • Rain in the weather.

  • Italian food at Anna's Italian Kitchen in Middletown which is overpriced. Calamari appetizer and two non-meat entrees: four cheese gnocchi and eggplant rollatini, with no drinks and no dessert, after a $25 off coupon, comes to $99! Yikes.

45:2012

2012-45-nov11.
  • Another week at Oma [grandma]'s house... reading books from the library, running through the snow with Kade, lighting the carved pumpkins.
  • Stuff on my Cat. The cat's name is Pumpkin Jack because he showed up on our doorstep one Halloween and never left.
  • Bottom row middle photo is taken by Erika. She borrowed my camera, told me and Oma to "go stand over there... move to the left... OK, smile!" and took our photo.

The Cat Doctor housecat, Diamond, is currently donating blood to save his life. During the exam, the vet found that this cat has a microchip. When called, his "owners" reported that he was acting sick, so they put him outside. 30-day Photo Meme: Day 5. a photo that makes you sad

This photo was taken January 9, 2004.
It's a photo of Tyler, Poseidon, and Ratso; three of the six cats that once lived with us in our Barnegat house.

This photo makes me sad because I miss them all.
The time this photo was taken was such a happy period in our lives: I was engaged to be married in six months, I had a great job as a fisheries biologist, we had a home with a large backyard, we had cats that loved us. Life was good.

We moved to an apartment in 2007 so I could be closer to work.
As a result of our contract agreement, we could only keep one pet-- so we kept our dog Kade and all the cats went to live with my mother-in-law. Five of the six of them died within 1 year.

When I see this photo, it makes me miss them so much and I can't help but feel... regret? Guilt? Sorrow?

R.I.P. Tyler

tyler

15 years ago, Brian adopted a 6-month old cat named Ratso from the shelter, and when she was brought to the vet to be fixed, they found out she was already pregnant. At that time, they had the option to either terminate the pregnancy, or get the surgery done after she gave birth.

She gave birth to four kittens a few months later, to two orange tabbys and two gray tabbys. They put a sign up (FREE KITTENS!) and the two gray tabbys were adopted right away, but the two orange ones remained. They were named Tippy and Tyler.

Tyler's brother Tippy died young, sometime in 2000, and he was completely heartbroken over this. His mother, Ratso passed away on October 8th, 2008. Since then, he has been very, very depressed.

Tyler passed away last night. He was 15 years old. He died in the same house he was born in, and I think he lived a pretty good life because of it.

cats

Right off the bat: I don't want any comments about how cats should be indoors only, and if you let your cats outdoors, you are cruel, mean, ignorant, stupid and not an animal lover.

When we moved to our current home, a 2-bedroom condominium, the cats have been temporarily rehoused to my mother-in-law's. She used to own two of the four of them before we took them in 2003. The first day, we got a call from the animal shelter 20 miles away-- somebody had caught one of them and taken them to the shelter. We had forgotten to change their tags (still displayed our old address), so it looked like the cat was 50 miles from home. We paid $180 to bail him out, then promptly went to the pet store to get new tags with my mom-in-law's phone number and address.

Most of the neighbors have been great, and they enjoy the cats (pet them, give them treats, sit with them...), but one neighbor called last weekend to say "hi, I just saw your cat and took him inside. He's wailing a lot [b/c he wants you to let him go], can you please come get him right away?" followed by a second call, 10 minutes later, "I caught a second cat.[ It was the first cat's mother] Please meet me at the school at 2pm to get your cats."

So my mom-in-law drives to the school, but nobody's there! She waits for a good amount of time, no one shows, there are no cats, she gets home, and there's a third message that says "I heard they are outdoor cats, so I just let them go." Uhh, if you cared so much to kidnap them, shouldn't you have held on to them at least until the owner showed up at 2pm like you had arranged? I just don't get people.

So Brian and I think we should go to the store and get new tags.

They will read: "If you can read this, LET ME GO."

ouch!

I was fast asleep and I must've rolled onto my side or squirmed the wrong way, but my cat Ratso who sleeps in bed with me bit down hard on my thigh, hissed, and ran off.

All this happened at 2 in the morning, so I really have no idea what happened. Other than the fact that I was awakened by a cat biting me, which is a frightening experience. I hope none of you are ever awoken by someone biting you!

I turned on my bed lamp, and there's quite a bit of blood. I wanted to run and find her and punish her, but I know it's not her fault. She was probably sleeping too and I rolled onto her and that's a frightening experience too!

Damn cat, she's as bitchy as I am!

cat presents

A dead mouse last week, legs hanging in the air but head and organs missing.

A mole this morning, with bloody guts smeared all over our newly cleaned hardwood floors.

.....CATS!!

There are 11 school days till finals. I told my students that today.

Today is the last day of new material. My first period class cheered when I said that. My second period class said "NNNNOOOOOO!! We want to learn more!! Can we learn more during lunch!?"

We close on the condo on June 10th. Wish us luck.

Can't take what isn't there: a cat neutering story

When Pumpkin showed up at our house on Halloween, he was malnourished, dirty, and mewing. I gave him a bowl of dry cat food, which he hungrily ate, then I kicked him out of the house. He waited on our front porch. He was there the following day, so I pulled the ticks off his body, wiped the mud out of his fur, and cleaned out his dirty mite-infested ears.

Based on his size (6 lbs.) and small lime-size testicles, we figured he was about 8 or 9 months old. When I took him to our vet, the vet said he was much older; based on his teeth, he was closer to 18 months old! I asked about the small size of his testicles, since by 18 months, they have fully descended, and the vet shrugged and said to schedule him to be neutered a.s.a.p. Price quoted me $250.

We waited 2 months (since Halloween basically) and nobody has called looking for him, so we figure we're now stuck with him and we should go ahead and get him fixed. I called the SPCA and they would charge only $55, so I made an appointment with them. Guess what I found out?

Pumpkin doesn't HAVE anything to neuter! Apparently he's already been neutered and the sacs are empty and shrinking already. The vet was going to screw me out of $250, claim they did the deed, and send me on my merry way! Can you believe that!?!?

(Post-note: When I told the story to a few people, they asked if we donated to the SPCA anyway. We did-- $55 well spent!!)

Pumpkin a.k.a. Jack

I don't like the name Pumpkin. I think it's like my friend, whom in high school, we called Billy. He was Billy in elementary school, and Billy in middle school, and Billy in high school. And when he went off to Harvard, he used "Bill", but all of us "old-timers" still keep slipping and saying "Billy" even after he's told us to use "Bill.

That's going to be Pumpkin. He's going to be a 10-year old cat with the most humiliating name. And when he gets lost? Brian has already said he's not going around the neighborhood yelling "Pumpkin" because he think that looks silly.

So I've taken to calling him "Jack". As in, "Jack O' Lantern". Still a Halloween theme. Brian looked at me, and said "His name is Pumpkin". *SIGH* I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow for a general check-up, rabies vaccination, dewormer, and tick/flea medication. Not getting him fixed because they want $250 for it!! (So I'm taking him to the low-cost animal clinic next week for $82. OUCH. When did it get so expensive?! Even I know how to do the procedure!) At registration, I'm putting "Jack Pumpkin" as his name. Brian said "why not Pumpkin Jack? Pumpkin should be his first name". OH HELL NO. Pumpkin = nickname, which means it's the middle name, no?

R.I.P. Patches

On Friday, October 27, 2006, we had to put Patches to sleep. She was fifteen years old. She lived with my mother-in-law.

Patches was Eddie's litter-mate. Eddie, who belonged to my brother-in-law, was put to sleep at age fourteen in May 2005 due to renal failure.

We also lost Rufus this year in May 2006 at age seventeen years, due to old age (he died in the house on his own).

Three cats in two years! All this just makes me want to cry.
I know fifteen years old is a good, long time for an indoor/outdoor cat to live. But I still miss Patches and her white paws, the way her tail quivered when your rubbed her on this one spot on her back, the way she purred.

I came home and looked at Ratso and just wanted to grab her and shake her, and tell her to stay healthy and not leave me anytime soon.
I love her so much, but she's next on the list!

Current age of remaining pets:
Ratso 13 years old
Tyler 12 years old
Kaiser 7 years old
Poseidon 5 years old
Kade 2 years old

(no subject)

Kade, my Border Collie, is a very active dog and constantly needs stimulation. Therefore, even whilst I am watching my favorite TV sitcom at night, I will ask him to do tasks for me to keep him busy-- bring me a tennis ball, the rope, the red ball, or the bone. Sometimes, I tell him to find not just objects but individuals, like his "daddy" or Kaiser the German Shepherd.

Yesterday, while watching TV, before I realized what I was saying, I absently commanded: "Find Rufus". And the words just hung there, in the heavy air between us, till Brian said emphatically, "Rufus is dead". (See post on May 17th, if you missed it)

Kade ran to the kitchen as the words left my lips, before I could take back the words, and came running back with a soft whimper and a confused frown. I felt like my heart would collapse in on itself, to fill the hole left behind by Rufus' departure.

RIP Rufus

Born summer 1989 in Virginia.

The "cat that lived on love". Who cherished all others. Who perservered against odds. Who loved all creatures on this Earth. Who showed compassion for everyone.

Passed away today, Wednesday, May 17, 2006.

Last Thursday, he lost control of his bowels and started soiling himself. This went on for three days, and then it stopped, we realized, because he had ceased eating. I guess he realized it was time. There was no more need to eat.

After almost a week of not eating, 17-year old Rufus finally died today.

Cat. Cherry blossoms.

Got home yesterday. And there was shit everywhere.

Picture a crime scene where somebody got stabbed and they end up staggering everywhere through the house, leaving little dark red droplets of blood. On the stairs, on the sofa, on the carpet, on the blankets, in the kitchen, in the dining room. That's what I saw. Except, instead of little red droplets of blood, it was dark brown clay-like droplets of poo.

Either Rufus, our 18-year old cat, ate something bad and is having serious diarrhea (he has chronic constipation and has seen the vet for the past 2 years), or he's lost bowel movement control. I left a tragically funny message on Brian's cellphone. Imagine my voice, speaking in slow motion, with complete horror as I enter the house and call him: "Umm.. Brian.. I just got home... and.. and, there's poop.. Everywhere. It's in the living room, on the sofa.... oh, God, it's in the dining room... and.... and the kitchen..." Brian put it on speaker phone when he got home. It was pretty funny in hindsight. It's like I was a CSI investigator narrating into a voice recorder the gory details of the crime scene.

I narrate the entire thing as I walk from room to room, following this trail of brown dots till I find the cat, oblivious that he's trailing poop throughout the house, and happy to see me. He's fur is matted with poop, his butt, his tail, his legs, it's just disgusting.

In more happy news, here are some photos of the cherry blossoms in Newark, NJ from three weeks ago.

Introducing...

So about a month ago, we adopted another cat. [livejournal.com profile] luxperpetua made a plea for her 7-year old cat named Little Bit. He needed a new home. We already had a lot of pets, but once you start running a zoo, what is one more cat.

So meet the ninth (ninth! If the animals start organizing, they'll realize they can overthrow us!) member of our household, Little Bit.

Now meet the Brady bunch )

you know you're raising badass cats when...

... your husband yells at one of the cats and tells him to return to the yard, so he won't beat up the 100-pound Rottweiler that lives next door.
