snow days

News reporters are calling it the "February Fury". School was canceled on both Thursday and Friday for me, and our cars are still snowed in, so I bet I'm going to get cabin fever fairly soon.

This makes it the fifth snow day this school year. We only have two school days built into our schedule around Memorial Day, so I'm sure a lot of people are upset that instead of getting 5-days off from school that week, we're only getting that Monday off.

And then all additional snow days are added on to the end of the school year, meaning that instead of graduating on June 17th this year, with the three remaining make-up days, it'll be June 20th... and if we get more snow days, it'll just keep getting pushed back farther.

Makes no difference to me because I'll be on maternity leave, so bring on the snow days between now and March 19th (my last day)!! Hehehe!!

I've been watching the Winter Olympics (the daytime stuff, like curling!), doing lesson plans, grading lab reports, and cleaning up the house.

March 19 - that's coming up really soon! When are you "due"?

I'm due April 5th. My maternity leave starts March 19th, but the week after is not added to my 12 weeks of leave because that's Spring Break, so from March 19th there's only 12 weeks of school left, which is perfect for me! :)

We get out June 28th right now, but who knows with future snow days? Your June 20th sounds pretty good right now...

When does your school year start? We start Sept 3, which is strange because some years it's before Labor Day, so students actually return from summer break for 2 - 3 days, and then we have the 3-day weekend.

What about hockey? Or speed skating? OMG the men's and women's pursuit speed skating was awesome today!

Wait, what channel was that on? I thought speed skating (short track?) was on during primetime. I didn't see any hockey on today, but I did watch it earlier in the week when it was on around 4 pm.

We've already lost Memorial Day. :/ If we have another snow day, they're going to have to maybe make us start going on Saturdays, which would SUCK.

Wait, they would make students come in on Saturdays too!? I can't imagine that ever happening around here!!

Some of the schools in NC are already doing that, and I remember it happening a couple of times when I was little. They only go until noon on Saturdays when it happens, but it's a huge pain and most of the kids don't come.

Don't you have an attendance requirement for it to count as a school day?

In our district, I believe you need at least an 80% attendance or it doesn't count! Which is a real big deal for us when seniors decide to do a "cut day" or if a town is closed and they don't send the buses to pick up the students to bus to our school...
