cats

Right off the bat: I don't want any comments about how cats should be indoors only, and if you let your cats outdoors, you are cruel, mean, ignorant, stupid and not an animal lover.

When we moved to our current home, a 2-bedroom condominium, the cats have been temporarily rehoused to my mother-in-law's. She used to own two of the four of them before we took them in 2003. The first day, we got a call from the animal shelter 20 miles away-- somebody had caught one of them and taken them to the shelter. We had forgotten to change their tags (still displayed our old address), so it looked like the cat was 50 miles from home. We paid $180 to bail him out, then promptly went to the pet store to get new tags with my mom-in-law's phone number and address.

Most of the neighbors have been great, and they enjoy the cats (pet them, give them treats, sit with them...), but one neighbor called last weekend to say "hi, I just saw your cat and took him inside. He's wailing a lot [b/c he wants you to let him go], can you please come get him right away?" followed by a second call, 10 minutes later, "I caught a second cat.[ It was the first cat's mother] Please meet me at the school at 2pm to get your cats."

So my mom-in-law drives to the school, but nobody's there! She waits for a good amount of time, no one shows, there are no cats, she gets home, and there's a third message that says "I heard they are outdoor cats, so I just let them go." Uhh, if you cared so much to kidnap them, shouldn't you have held on to them at least until the owner showed up at 2pm like you had arranged? I just don't get people.

So Brian and I think we should go to the store and get new tags.

They will read: "If you can read this, LET ME GO."
:)
