Pumpkin a.k.a. Jack

I don't like the name Pumpkin. I think it's like my friend, whom in high school, we called Billy. He was Billy in elementary school, and Billy in middle school, and Billy in high school. And when he went off to Harvard, he used "Bill", but all of us "old-timers" still keep slipping and saying "Billy" even after he's told us to use "Bill.

That's going to be Pumpkin. He's going to be a 10-year old cat with the most humiliating name. And when he gets lost? Brian has already said he's not going around the neighborhood yelling "Pumpkin" because he think that looks silly.

So I've taken to calling him "Jack". As in, "Jack O' Lantern". Still a Halloween theme. Brian looked at me, and said "His name is Pumpkin". *SIGH* I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow for a general check-up, rabies vaccination, dewormer, and tick/flea medication. Not getting him fixed because they want $250 for it!! (So I'm taking him to the low-cost animal clinic next week for $82. OUCH. When did it get so expensive?! Even I know how to do the procedure!) At registration, I'm putting "Jack Pumpkin" as his name. Brian said "why not Pumpkin Jack? Pumpkin should be his first name". OH HELL NO. Pumpkin = nickname, which means it's the middle name, no?

Just keep calling him Jack, even if Brian insists on doing otherwise. Never give in.

I think Doug's mom named their orange tabby pumpkin as well (such a lame name), but I call it Atilla. I will always call it Atilla, in protest.

Of course, the downside is that if you ever tell a Pagan about your cat, you'd immediately have to follow it up with, "And I know it's really pronounced 'sowwin,' I just have this irresistibly clever friend on Livejournal..."

The amount of thought going into this is cracking me up. I think Jack should go first if that's his real name, but "Pumpkin Jack" sounds better.

He'll probably be smart enough to answer to both if he winds up being called both. Spaz has a real name (Sasha) that I never use, but she'll answer to it if I say it. I put Sasha on all her official paperwork, though :P

That's kind of how my parents' cat got named. Mom named him Dingo, because he was HER cat, but Dad thought that was a dumb name and said, "I'm going to call him Doug." Father's Day was two days after we adopted Dingo/Doug, and Dad said all he wanted for Father's Day was for us to call the cat Doug for the day. He was joking, but the name stuck.

I couldn't begin to figure out why his middle name, as dubbed by my mother, is Ferdinand, though.

My mom's orange cat is named Punkin. I wouldn't be surprised if Pumpkin in some form is the most common name for orange cats.

he actually LOOKS like a jack 'o lantern, so i'd vote jack (what with his slitty eyes..) pumpkin conjures up a rounder, more cuddly cat (not that jack can't be cuddly, he just doesn't look chubby..)
